In the eighteenth century Havana was a favorite vacation spot for the aristocracy of Europe. There they were introduced to the Havanese and brought them back to find favor in the courts of Spain, France, and England.. By the mid-eighteenth century, these dogs were very popular in Europe. Queen Victoria owned two Havanese dogs and Charles Dickens owned one as well. They are part of the Bichon family of small breeds.

• Havanese are bred for companionship. They are people lovers and are especially good with children. They are very eager to please, which makes them easy to train.
  

• Havanese are NOT yippy, hyper, or snappy, as many small dogs are. They get very excited when company comes and they love everyone. The only time they bark is to let you know that someone is outside. They do NOT bark without a good reason.

Havanese do not shed or have a dog odor. However, they will need to be brushed regularly to prevent matting. They are hypoallergenic which makes them the ideal dog for those who suffer from pet dander allergies.

• According to the Havanese breed standard, the Havanese height should range from 8 1/2" to 11 1/2". There is no difference between the disposition of the male and female Havanese.
